Deadlines

Court and limitation dates kept on the matter — and the one thing you must not assume they do.

2 min readReviewed 29 October 2026

A deadline is a date kept on the matter, with a title and a kind: court, limitation or other. An accounting firm sees the same panel headed filing and limitation dates.

They are dates somebody types

This is the most important sentence on this page, so it comes first.

Pertavo does not calculate deadlines. It holds no rules for any court, jurisdiction or limitation period, and it does not know that a defence is due fourteen days after service or that a claim is out of time after six years. Every date here was worked out by a person and entered by hand.

That makes this a place to record a date you have already calculated, and a bad place to look for one you have not. If your practice needs a docketing system that derives dates from rules, this is not one, and treating it as one is the way a limitation date gets missed.

Adding one

Open the matter, then Court and limitation deadlines → add. Title it the way you would say it — “Inheritance tax account due”, “Break clause notice, last day to serve” — and pick the kind. The list sorts by date, soonest first.

One that has been dealt with can be marked done, and one entered wrongly can be removed, so the panel stays a list of what is still ahead rather than a history of everything that was ever typed.

What happens as one approaches

Nothing automatic. There is no reminder email, no alert and no escalation. Nothing in Pertavo will tell you a date is coming.

What it does do is carry the soonest one out to the matters list, so a weekly look down that page shows which files have something ahead of them without opening any. It also puts the date on the calendar, beside the tasks and appointments falling the same week.

And if you want something that will nudge you, subscribe to these dates from the calendar on your phone — the reminder then comes from an app built to give them, rather than from us claiming to. Either way the review is still a habit: the software makes it quick, it does not do it.

Who sees them

Everybody staffed on the matter, and the firm’s owners and admins. Clients do not see the deadline panel.
