Uploading documents
How to get a file into the portal, what is accepted, and what to fill in while you are there.

Upload a file
- Open Documents and press Upload Document.
- Drag the file onto the panel, or press it to pick one from your computer.
- Fill in the details that matter for finding it again:
- Document Type — from your firm’s own list.
- Folder — where it should be filed.
- Assignment — the client or colleague it belongs to.
- Notes — anything the next person to open it needs to know.
- Press Upload.
Only the file itself is required. Everything else can be set afterwards from the document’s row, but a file uploaded with no type, no folder and nobody assigned is a file somebody has to deal with later.
What is accepted
By default: PDF, DOCX, XLSX, JPG, JPEG and PNG, up to 50 MB each.
Both of those are your firm’s to change, under Settings → Organization → Documents — an admin can narrow the file types or lower the size limit. A file that breaks either rule is refused at the moment you upload it, with a message saying which rule it broke, so nothing half-uploads.
Uploading several at once
Upload files one at a time when each needs different details. Where a batch shares a client, a type and a folder, upload them together and set the details once.
When a client uploads
Clients upload the same way, into their own account. If your firm has turned on approval for client uploads, their file arrives as Pending Approval and waits for somebody at the firm to accept it before it joins the working set. See Document status and approvals.
If an upload fails
Check the size and the extension first — between them they explain most failures. The rest are covered in When an upload will not go through.
